All that's really important to know is that I love God, my family, writing, speaking, and Chinese food—in that order.

CHRISTMAS GREETING LOADING

Friday/Saturday (12.23/24)
'there is no peace on earth,' I said

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow didn't feel in much of a holiday mood when, during the Civil War, he heard the bells on Christmas Day. His wife had been killed in a house fire in 1861, and his son had been critically wounded in the War in December 1863. But his famous poem, believed to have been written in 1864, offers hope in God's providence amidst his (and our) current chaos and crises.

all sin separates us from God, not just . . .

Whew! The comments on the Brokeback Mountain post (see Tuesday) have been, shall we say “lively.” It’s disturbing, though, to see that some conservative Christians view homosexual behavior as the worst possible sin. We need to be reminded that all Scripture is inspired by God and all sin separates us from Him.

Tuesday (12.20)
Brokeback Mountain broken in many ways

The film, nominated for seven Golden Globe Awards, documents the twenty-year relationship between Jack Twist and Ennis Del Mar. It begins in a tiny tent while the men watch sheep on Brokeback Mountain, and progresses through both homosexual and heterosexual affairs. Perhaps even more disturbing than the graphic depiction of their sexual encounters, is the lack of commitment to each other or to the wives they eventually marry. (Isn't adultery every bit as destructive as homosexual behavior?) This is not a "love" story, so some thoughts on . . .

original A Christmas Story still playing, still best

Saturday night Lois and I, along with Faith and Mike, thoroughly enjoyed the stage adaptation of the film adaptation of Jean Shepherd's warm and witty book A Christmas Story. Two thumbs up! But the "original" Christmas story is still the best.
