All that's really important to know is that I love God, my family, writing, speaking, and Chinese food—in that order.

killer Katrina

My thoughts and
prayers are with the survivors and families
of victims of this
incomprehensible
disaster

Friday (09.02)
is God to blame for New Orleans destruction?

First and foremost, my thoughts and prayers are with the people of the Gulf coast. This is indeed destruction of biblical proportions. But the blame for the tragedy lies not with God but with French explorer Rene-Robert Cavelier for founding a city below sea level surrounded by a lake, river, and ocean.

'you were doing it to me'

"For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.' "Then these righteous ones will reply, 'Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you?
Or thirsty and give you something to drink? Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing? When did we ever see you sick or in prison, and visit you?' And the King will tell them, 'I assure you, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!'"

hurricane leaves destruction, death, suicide

With "hundreds" feared dead, Mississippi governor Haley Barbour told the "Today" show "the devastation . . . is just enormous." In New Orleans conditions worsened as a breach in the levee system sent more water into the already flooded city. In the Superdome, where 10,000 people have taken refuge, conditions are described as "filthy" with one man reportedly taking his own life by leaping from an upper level. The suicide dramatizes the emotional as well as physical toll Katrina has left in her wake. I trust these links are helpful:

where is God?!

God sends the rain on the just and unjust, but does He send natural disasters like Katrina on both? Here are some thoughts I shared after December's deadly tsuami:
- Is God to blame? [new]
- Dealing with loss and grief

Monday (08.29)
first Robertson, now Phelps embarrass Christians

According to the AP, Fred (godhatesfags.com, godhatesamerica.com) Phelps claimed "God is punishing American soldiers for defending a country that harbors gays" as he and his followers (mostly family members) picketed the funerals of two Tennessee soldiers killed in Iraq. On his website, Phelps wrote, "Thank God for IEDs [Improvised Explosive Devices] killing American soldiers in strange lands every day." Robertson's remarks were thoughtless; Phelps heartless!

Sunday (08.28)
evangelical lemmings?!

A new poll suggests that the more often Americans go to church, the more supportive they are of U.S. foreign policy, including the war in Iraq. The poll by Public Agenda finds that people who frequently attend worship services are far more likely to support the war on terror and believe that the U.S. is achieving its objectives in Iraq.
