saturday: genocide not high priority

While the American media focuses on Iraq and the United Nations debates Iran, in Sudan, the murder and rape of thousands goes unnoticed. And why isn't the three-year genocide getting more media and government attention? Gloria White-Hammond of the Save Darfur Coalition believes, "The Members of [US] Congress, even while considering legislation, say the genocide is not a high priority for their constituents."

friday: are you a 'geek' or 'geezer'?

In his book Leading with Significance, David McKenna makes the distinction between "geeks" and "geezers." He writes: "Geezers are senior leaders born in 1925 or after whose lives have been shaped by the Great Depression and World War II. They are the products of the Era of Limits. Geeks are young leaders under the age of 30 who were born after 1975 and into a time of affluence, high technology, and a global economy. They are products of the Era of Options. The personal values that these two generations bring to leadership are worlds apart."

• Geezers have the goal of making a living
• Geezers learn from history
• Geezers are geared to external success
Geezers seek stability
• Geezers need a road map in order to lead
Geezers read the classics
Geezers have heroes

Geeks want to make a life

Geeks want to make history
Geeks are more interested in internal self-identity
Geeks seek significance
Geeks ask only for a compass

Geeks surf the Net
• Geeks idolize celebrities

I've highlighted my characteristics. So chronologically and characteristically, I’m somewhere between geezer and geek, which I guess makes me a geekzer! (No one ever fits one of two—or four or sixteen—categories.)

10 am thursday: scientist claims 'missing link' discovered

The Guardian is reporting, "Scientists have made one of the most important fossil finds in history: a missing link between fish and land animals, showing how creatures first walked out of the water and on to dry land." The reporter reveals his bias by writing, "As such, it will be a blow to proponents of intelligent design, who claim that the many gaps in the fossil record show evidence of some higher power." Sorry Alok Jha, science correspondent, there are a lot more problems with the theory of evolution than simply missing links.

thursday: speaking at fort wayne, in, writers' conference

I'll be speaking at the American Christian Writers' conference in Fort Wayne tomorrow (April 7). I'll be teaching "Article Writing" while Wesleyan Publishing House's Mark Moore will be speaking on book writing. This is a great (and economical) way to get an overview of opportunities in Christian publishing.

wednesday: virtual sex leads to very real sex

Reuters is reporting, and I quote . . .

Sexually charged music, magazines, TV and movies push youngsters into intercourse at an earlier age, perhaps by acting as kind of virtual peer that tells them everyone else is doing it, a study said Monday.

"This is the first time we've shown that the more kids are exposed to sex in media the earlier they have sex," said Jane Brown of the University of North Carolina, chief author of the report.

In general it found that the highest exposure levels led to more sexual activity, with white teens in the group 2.2 times more likely to have had intercourse at ages 14 to 16 than similar youngsters who had the least exposure.

Conservatives have been sounding that warning for the last few decadent decades! The study also documented that teenaged sex is reduced when parents talk to younger children about sex.

tuesday: holy smoke!

Thanks to Al Speegle for pointing out the amazing similarities between the logos of Philip Morris and the Trinity Broadcasting Network. Let's see, their leaders make millions and both are viewed as unhealthy by many critics.

4:30 pm monday: death exactly what terrorist fantasizes

The jury has recommended death for 9/11 conspirator Zacharias Moussaoui—which is exactly what the terrorist fantasizes: martyrdom and 72 virgins in Islamic heaven. The US will create ten more terrorists by executing this one terrorist!

monday: prayer proven 'ineffective' in scientific study

The Associated Press is reporting, and I quote, "Praying for other people to recover from an illness is ineffective, according to the largest, best-designed study to try to examine the power of prayer to heal strangers at a distance.

"The study of more than 1,800 heart bypass surgery patients found that those who had other people praying for them had as many complications as those who did not. In fact, one group of patients who knew they were the subject of prayers fared worse."

sunday: st. paul doesn't want to offend non-christians

Jay Leno reports, "In St. Paul, Minnesota, city hall removed a display of an Easter bunny, pastel eggs and a sign with the words 'Happy Easter' because they might offend non-Christians. Good thing. You certainly don't want anything Christian tainting a city called St. Paul."
