saturday: senate delays debate on marriage protection

"The Marriage Protection Ammendment," which would define marriage as "the union of a man and a woman" and so ban same-sex marriage, was to go to the Senate next month, but has now been delayed until June. So, more time to voice your opinion.

2 pm friday: 2,500 Filipinos feared dead after mud slide

My thoughts and prayers go out to the people of the Philippines following a deadly mudslide that buried an entire village in the Southern Leyte region. Here are some resources that may be helpful:
- Dealing with death and grief
- Dealing with the questions of why

friday: meet my soul brother, james robert watkins

February is Black History Month, so I'd like you to meet an author, poet, social reformer and former slave with whom I'm proud to share a name.

11 am thursday: is cheney a sly ole 'fox'?
CNN and the other so-called "liberal media" are having a hissy fit over Vice President Cheney giving an exclusive interview with the so-called "conservative" Fox News network three days after shooting his hunting buddy. CNN commentator Jack Cafferty called the interview "a little bit like Bonnie interviewing Clyde." Duh, Jack, do you suppose it's because of that attitude the VP chose to be interviewed on Fox?! (All the media frenzy could have been avoided, though, if Cheney would have immediately made a statement rather than ignoring the issue Sunday-Wednesday.)

thursday: my top ten birthday list
When I hit the big 5-0, I wrote ten promises to myself—and others. So, on another post-fifty birthday (I'm not telling how post), I have in my wrinkled right hand, direct from my handicap accessible home office, today's top ten list . . .
10. I will not obsess about my cholesterol level, the cost of prescriptions or the condition of my colon. Social Security rip-offs, conspiracy theories, government corruption, and "that horrible noise they call modern music" are also off limits during the "Early Bird" dinner hour at Denny's.

9:00 am wednesday: let's balance Iraqi POW pics
Newly released photos of abuse of Iraqi prisoners are all over the news this morning. The abuse of Iraqi POW's by US troops is inexcusable and unconscionable, but let's balance those obscene photos with these images of courage and compassion.

wednesday: I'd like to see these people get gold
Sure, it looks pretty cool to see men and women risk life and ligaments on snowboards, but how does speeding at 60 mph across the snow on an overgrown ski contribute to making this world a better place to live? I'd like to see these people on the podium getting gold medals . . .

tuesday: happy valentine's day!
"Love never gives up. Love cares more for others than for self. Love doesn't want what it doesn't have. Love doesn't strut, Doesn't have a swelled head, Doesn't force itself on others, Isn't always 'me first,' Doesn't fly off the handle, Doesn't keep score of the sins of others, Doesn't revel when others grovel, Takes pleasure in the flowering of truth, Puts up with anything, Trusts God always, Always looks for the best, Never looks back, But keeps going to the end" (1 Corinthians 13, The Message).

monday: great ideas from criminal minds
I love the crime show Criminal Minds and especially agent Gideon's great quotations. (It's always the same scene: the FBI's private jet is in flight as you hear the voice over.) Okay, it's kinda hokey, but here's one of my favorites: "What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us; what we have done for others and the world remains and is immortal," Albert Pike (1809-91).

sunday: doing some virtual home remodeling
After designing my wife's site last week, I thought, my site could probably use a facelift (not implying in any way my wife needs a facelift). So, here's what I came up with. You can click on the pics above to go to the related articles and/or columns.

last week: Olympic judging; democratic dangers;
cartoon war; message, not money-driven movie-makers; super Super Bowl ads; plus early birds get worm—so worms, sleep in!
