Saturday (02.11)
top ten ways to make Olympic judging fairer

In 2002, Canadian skaters David Pelletier and Jamie Sale performed what commentators called a "flawless" performance, and
the audience shouted "Six! Six! Six!" (I should point out that is not Revelation's "mark of the beast,"
but six is a perfect score in skating.) Chinese and Polish judges didn't see it that way and
|
awarded their comrades from Russia the gold. The controversy became so intense that eventually the Canadian couple also
received a belated gold medal.
- Here's my top ten list for making the judging fairer

FCC study: 'a la carte service' cable cheaper
Cable stations "bundling" channels means you pay for channels you never watch. It's like going to the grocery store
for a head of lettuce and being forced to also buy broccoli, endive, egg plant and Brussel sprouts. Ick! Legislation
would require cable companies to charge you for only the channels to which you subscribe.

Wednesday (02.08)
democracy is dangerous!

President Bush's mandate to spread democracy throughout the world has a dangerous side-effect. People in
a democracy with free elections may elect terrorists to office (ie.
Hamas winning Palestinian elections
and
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad being elected president
of Iran).
In my opinion, democracy has brought positive change to
only those countries with a strong Judeo-Christian basis of
value of human life, respect for one's enemies, and allowance for
peaceful disagreement. Without strong discipline within, there must be strong discipline without to maintain
order. So, Mr. President, there may be
|
countries that cannot handle the freedom of democracy; a dictatorship may
be the only form of government capable of maintaining order in some countries until there is a change within the citizens themselves.
- St. Paul's thoughts on the subject
Discuss among yourselves:
- Was St. Paul teaching that the heavy-handed Roman government was "established by God"?
- Is changing a form of government by force "rebelling against what God has instituted"?
- How does one "overcome evil with good"?
- And why didn't Jesus speak out against
the social and politicals evils of His time, but instead focused on the attitudes and behaviors of individauls?
(I don't have all the answers; just a lot of questionsand a headache!)

message not money motivates movie-makers

Today at 3 pm EST, I'm being interviewed on an Australian radio station which rebroadcasts to 230 stations around
the world. Please pray I don't create an international incident by something I say! I'm being asked about the recent
Academy Award nominations, so . . .

what were the best and worst Super Bowl ads?

Last week's "topics" were pretty "heavy," so let’s start the week "with a light touch" by asking, "What were the best and worst
Super Bowl commercials?"
- My nominee for best goes to Budweiser’s baby Clydesdale. Beautiful cinematography and a heart-warmingeven
Christianimage of bearing one another’s burdens and doing good deeds unseen.
- My nominee for the worst goes to Fed Ex’s caveman being stomped by a brontosaurus. Humor in America has hit an all-time low when someone being killed is supposed to be funny!
- What were the best and worst for you?

reading Koran to gain understanding

Over the weekend, violence by Muslims escalated over what they call "blasphemous" cartoons of Allah. It's also prompted
lively
discussion in the blogsphere over what Muslims do and don't believe about defending their faith. (Click
here for the debate on the "Christian" versus
"Muslim" response to perceived persecution.) So, I've started
reading the Koran myself to gain some understanding.

Sunday (02.05)
super Sunday in the Congo

While Americans are focused on the Super Bowl game, the wife and daughter of the Seahawk's
coach, Mike Holmgren, will be on a medical mission in the Congo. "It gives me great joy that she will go,"
Coach Holgren told reporters. The coach gave his wife, Kathy, the trip as a Christmas gift as she had served as a missionary
nurse in the Congo before they married. There's no doubt who will have the greatest and longest-lasting impact on
human lives!
