texas man gets death penalty for killing fetus

Adrian Estrada, 23, was convicted Friday of one count of capital murder for the death of girlfriend Stephanie Sanchez—and the fetus, of which he was the father. Yesterday, in San Antonio, he received the death penalty for both deaths. According to the AP, "A 2003 Texas law amended the definition of the word 'individual' to include an 'unborn child at every stage of gestation from fertilization until birth.'" Thirty-six other states have homicide laws defining a fetus as a "person."

lust in space: out-of-this-world headlines

I love clever headlines and book titles. So when U.S. astronaut Lisa Marie Nowak was charged with trying to kill a fellow female astronaut over a male astronaut, the headline writers were flying high. Here are a few of my favorites:
The Wrong Stuff
Spaced-out mission
From high-flying career to "astro-nut"
Houston, we have a problem
Astronaut's bright career nose dives with attempted murder charges
Astronaut grounded after attack
A rough landing for a star astronaut
And my absolute favorites:
Lust in Space (Melborne Herald Sun)

law would require married couples to have children—
or have marriage annulled

Yep, you read that right. From the state that's brought you proposed laws legalizing euthanasia and pot, comes this news item from Washington state:

OLYMPIA, Wash. - An initiative filed by proponents of same-sex marriage would require heterosexual couples to have kids within three years or else have their marriage annulled.

Initiative 957 was filed by the Washington Defense of Marriage Alliance. That group was formed last summer after the state Supreme Court upheld Washington's ban on same-sex marriage.

Under the initiative, marriage would be limited to men and women who are able to have children. Couples would be required to prove they can have children in order to get a marriage license, and if they did not have children within three years, their marriage would be subject to annulment.

All other marriages would be defined as "unrecognized" and people in those marriages would be ineligible to receive any marriage benefits.

For many years, social conservatives have claimed that marriage exists solely for the purpose of procreation. ... The time has come for these conservatives to be dosed with their own medicine," said WA-DOMA organizer Gregory Gadow in a printed statement. If same-sex couples should be barred from marriage because they cannot have children together, it follows that all couples who cannot or will not have children together should equally be barred from marriage."

They do make a point if, like US Senator Rick Santorum argues, marriage is—and I quote—"principally because of children. It's the reason for marriage. It's not to affirm the love of two people. That's not what marriage is about."

That logic is as flawed as the Washington Defense of Marriage Alliance's argument!

just let God enjoy the game!

Both Colts coach, Tony Dungy, and Bears coach, Lovie Smith, are out-spoken Christians.

Smith told the Dallas News, "God is the center of my life. It controls all that I do. I hope I dont have to spend my time telling my players Im a Christian. I hope they see it in my life every day.

Dungy is featured on an evangelistic Super Bowl video. Following the Colts' win over New England, the coach said, The Lord tested us a lot this year, but He set this up to get all the glory.

So, who is God going to cheer for during the Super Bowl? As long as He gets "all the glory," He couldn't care less. Just let Him enjoy the game!

Do you think God has a favorite team?

i'm a brennan manning fan

The entire state of Indiana has turned blue—and it's not because of the single-digit temperatures. The Colts are in the Super Bowl! But to be honest, I'd rather read a Brennan Manning book than watch a Peyton Manning game. I think it may stem from (a) being picked last for teams in junior high phys. ed., (b) hating any event with the word "spectator" in the title, (c) mourning with my "cheesehead" wife that the Packers aren't playing Sunday . . .

Daniel Radcliffe, Harry Potter conjure up controversy

Some parents are calling Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe "Dirty Harry" for appearing nude in the London play "Equus." Racliffe plays a stable-hand with, and I quote, "an erotic fixation with horses." He told Newsweek, "Part of me wants to shake up people's perception of me, just shove me in a blender." Is that even legal?! (Not being shoved in a blender, but appearing nude on stage at age 17?) In the colonies, he would be classified as a minor and his performance considered child pornography.

And in another Harry Potter revelation, J. K. Rowling has announced on her Web site that the final book in the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows, will be unveiled at midnight July 21. Some have speculated that in this book, Harry may also be taking off his magic robe.

It seems the magical innocence of the younger Harry Potter is being stripped away.

lois' 'thoughts' on zambia

They say, "Home is where the heart is." Six days back in the USA and I don't think I am completely home yet. Part of it could be jet-lag, which can be a very real ordeal for some. Professional fliers advise drinking a lot of water, limiting caffeine and carbohydrates, plus forcing yourself to stay up until it is bedtime in your present time zone. However, I am realizing that my condition has more to do with "heart-lag" than jet-lag. If Tony Bennett can leave his heart in San Francisco, I can leave mine in Zambia.

Lois and I are back safe and sound from our World Hope visit to Zambia where I was reporting on the HIV/AID crisis there and the ophrans this tragedy has created. One pastor noted, "You are either infected or affected." So true!
