American Christian Writers of Nashville, Tennessee, has proclaimed August 15th as annual Editor Appreciation Day. They urge all writers to participate in the annual event.

There are three ways to be involved:

1. Send a card to all your favorite editors. We are working to develop Editor Appreciation Day cards, but until they are available just use regular “thank you” or “appreciation” cards that are available at all stationary and greeting card stores. Be sure to write in “Editor Appreciation Day – August 15th”. Ideally the cards should be sent during the months of July and August, but you may want to begin to compile your list now. We recommend that you DO NOT include a query letter, proposal or manuscript with the card so that the editor will see that your showing of appreciation is not with an ulterior motive.

2. If at all possible treat at least one editor to lunch during the week of Editor Appreciation Day. Use the time at lunch to talk about the editor’s interests. Only talk of yourself or your writing if invited to by your guest.

3. Email your nomination to ACW at EditAppreciation@aol.com for Editor Of The Year. The editor receiving the highest number of nominations will be declared the Editor Of The Year.

It is high time that editors in our industry be shown appreciation for the important role they play. Many of them work long hours, are underpaid and are constantly under a lot of pressure. Spread the word about this new annual event. Get every member of your writers group involved.
